Saturdays should bring us together

Grandma's keftedakia with sweet potatoes and a yogurt dip.
One of my favorite things in the world is food, and one of my favorite foods in the world is keftedakia (meatballs). In my mother’s house, we had two doors; one for our apartment and one for my grandma’s. Both were on the same floor. The culinary highlight of the week was always Saturday, when the entire family gathered to eat at my grandma’s. In the morning, I’d watch kids’ shows on TV, never missing an episode of Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh!, and then I’d go to Tae-kwon-do practice. The trip home was my post-workout run, since I’d leave practice running but also climb the stairs to the third floor, where my home was, on foot. From the second floor, I could already smell my grandma’s cooking, and by the time I reached my apartment, my mouth was already watering. On Saturdays, I would open the door leading to my grandma’s apartment and always find her waiting for me, her apron greasy from frying keftedakia.
I also added sweet potatoes, which I think suit this recipe really well. I think this favorite dish of mine also pairs really nicely with one of my favorite tsipouros, tsipouro Apostolaki without anise.
Today I’m sharing this recipe with you, with grandma’s written permission.

Grate the onion into a large bowl.
Add all the remaining ingredients in the bowl and mix well.
Cover and let the mixture rest for 30 minutes.
TipWhile the mixture rests, get the sweet potatoes going.
Shape into small balls and fry in olive oil.
Remove the meatballs from the oil and place them in a bowl lined with paper towels. Once they’re all out, squeeze lemon over them and discard the paper towels.
Preheat the oven to 180°C on the convection setting.
Cut the sweetpotatoes in half and place them on a baking tray with parchment paper.
Prick the sweet potatoes in several places with a fork, then drizzle a little olive oil over them and season with salt and pepper.
Put the potatoes in the oven and bake them for 35 mins.
Serving suggestion:Serve with a Greek yogurt dip with lemon and a glass of Apostolaki tsipouro with 2 ice cubes.
